What do you do when your whole life changes at 23, alone, in a country that is not your own? In this episode of Transformational Conversations, Jordan Dunin sits down with Ariana Alcantara, holistic nutrition coach and founder of Nutrition by Ariana, for a conversation about the moment that changed everything: a cancer diagnosis that arrived while she was far from her family in Brazil, and the emergency surgery that left her without a voice for three months. What happened next is the real story. Instead of staying in fear, Ariana made a conscious decision to want to live, and turned a terrifying chapter into a lifelong study of the body, nutrition, and what it actually takes to heal.

The Turning Point: Cancer at 23, Alone in a New Country

Ariana's cancer diagnosis at age 23 was the catalyst for her career in holistic health. She was alone in Canada, having come from Brazil, when the diagnosis arrived, and the terror of that isolation shaped everything that followed.

The cancer had likely been present since age 12, having spread to the lymphatic system. Emergency surgery carried a high risk of permanent voice loss due to large tumors on the vocal cords. The result was three months without a voice, followed by a cascade of other health issues including gallbladder removal and low immunity.

Fear and depression led to a survival mode shutdown, characterized by numbness and constant panic attacks. Then came the shift: a conscious decision to want to live, which prompted a deep dive into nutrition and biology, initially driven by fear but evolving into a genuine passion for understanding the body.

"Instead of staying in fear, I made a conscious decision to want to live. That decision turned a terrifying chapter into a lifelong study of the body, nutrition, and what it actually takes to heal." Ariana Alcantara

The 5-Pillar Framework for a Meaningful Life

Ariana's coaching philosophy is a 5-pillar framework for simplifying wellness and avoiding overwhelm. Each pillar builds on the one before it, and together they form a complete approach to a meaningful life.

1. Nutrition

The foundational step. Nutrition encompasses food, environmental chemicals like pesticides and personal care products, and mindful eating habits. Ariana's actionable starting point is simple: three quality, non-processed meals daily, cooked at home, eaten mindfully without distractions.

2. Movement

Movement builds the metabolic engine. Slow, low-intensity movement like walking is more effective for fat burning than high-intensity exercise, which burns carbohydrates. The key is finding enjoyable activities like dancing or biking to ensure consistency.

3. Nervous System Regulation

Emotional mastery and self-awareness. The goal is understanding that emotions are temporary states, not your core identity. Shifting to high-frequency states like gratitude can instantly alleviate anxiety, because gratitude and anxiety cannot coexist in the body.

4. Awareness

Presence and inner connection. Ariana defines spirituality as an inner connection, not external acquisition. Practices include meditation and nature walks, which she describes as a form of frequency resonance that helps settle the nervous system.

5. Love

The ultimate force. Love is a universal force, and experiencing it for even short periods, like 10 minutes, creates a positive ripple effect that touches everything else in your life.

The Power of Perception: The Reticular Activating System

The Reticular Activating System (RAS) is a midbrain filter that proves what you focus on expands. If you look for brown objects, your brain filters out the red ones. The same principle applies to how you perceive your challenges and your health.

Jordan shared that his own vertigo symptoms were amplified by focusing on them. Ariana's reframe is to see it as happening for you, not to you. The body is sending a signal, and the experience is amplified by focus, not created by fault.

"What you focus on expands. Gratitude and anxiety cannot coexist in the body. Shifting your perception from 'happening to you' to 'happening for you' is the key to transformation." Ariana Alcantara

Surrender, Not Control

The human drive to control is the root of suffering, and surrender is the solution. Surrender means letting go of the need to control outcomes and trusting a higher intelligence. This allows for natural unfolding, which is often more effective than forcing a result.

This is not a conversation about cancer. It is a conversation about perception, surrender, and choosing to see your life as happening for you instead of to you.

What to Do Next

  • Identify which of the 5 pillars (Nutrition, Movement, Nervous System Regulation, Awareness, Love) needs the most attention in your life right now
  • Practice slow, low-intensity movement like walking to build your metabolic engine and burn fat more efficiently
  • When anxiety arises, shift into gratitude, the two cannot coexist in the body
  • Notice where the drive to control is creating suffering, and experiment with surrendering what you cannot control
