Both burnout and chronic fatigue leave you exhausted. Both make it hard to focus, hard to feel motivated, hard to be present. But they are not the same thing - and treating one with the protocols for the other rarely works.
What Is Burnout?
The World Health Organization defines burnout as a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It has three defining features: emotional exhaustion, cynicism or depersonalization (feeling detached from your work and the people around you), and reduced professional efficacy.
Burnout is primarily contextual - it's driven by specific situations, demands, and environments. Change the context enough, and symptoms can improve. Burnout rarely responds well to more rest alone, because the nervous system is still under threat - even when the body is inactive.
What Is Chronic Fatigue?
Chronic fatigue - distinct from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), which is a specific medical diagnosis - is a persistent state of physical and cognitive depletion that doesn't resolve with rest. It often has identifiable physiological roots: disrupted sleep architecture, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or unaddressed inflammatory responses.
The Key Difference
- Burnout responds to context changes - vacation, role changes, removing specific stressors
- Chronic fatigue often persists across contexts - you feel drained even when the work pressure is off
- Burnout has a strong emotional component (cynicism, detachment); chronic fatigue is primarily physical
- Burnout is primarily psychological/nervous system-driven; chronic fatigue often has metabolic or physiological underpinnings
Many high performers have both simultaneously - which is why recovery requires a multi-dimensional approach.
HatchPath coaches help clients distinguish between burnout and chronic fatigue and build personalized recovery plans that address both dimensions.
