Coaching vs. Therapy: What's the Difference and Do You Need Both?

"Should I get a coach or a therapist?" It's one of the most common questions we hear - and the honest answer is: it depends on what you need. Sometimes both. Here's how to think about it.

The Core Distinction

Therapy is a licensed healthcare profession focused on diagnosing and treating psychological conditions - anxiety disorders, depression, trauma, PTSD, OCD, and other clinical presentations. Therapists explore the past to understand how it shapes the present. The work is often oriented toward healing, stabilization, and the resolution of psychological suffering.

Coaching is not a licensed healthcare profession (though many coaches hold professional credentials). It assumes the client is psychologically healthy and functioning - and works with that person to optimize performance, close goal gaps, build skills, and navigate change. The orientation is primarily present and future-focused.

When You Need Therapy

  • You're experiencing symptoms of a diagnosable mental health condition (anxiety disorder, depression, PTSD, etc.)
  • Your daily functioning is significantly impaired
  • You've experienced trauma that needs to be processed with a trained clinician
  • You're in crisis or having thoughts of self-harm
  • You want to understand how childhood or formative experiences are shaping your current patterns

When You Need Coaching

  • You're functioning well but want to perform better
  • You have specific goals you want to achieve and need structure, accountability, and strategy
  • You're navigating a major transition (career change, promotion, burnout recovery) without clinical mental health symptoms
  • You want to build skills: communication, leadership, habits, emotional regulation
  • You want a thinking partner who will challenge your assumptions and hold you accountable

Why Many People Benefit From Both

Therapy and coaching are complementary, not competing. It's completely appropriate - and often very effective - to work with a therapist to process past experiences and heal, while simultaneously working with a coach to build skills, set goals, and take action. Many of our clients at HatchPath do exactly this.

HatchPath coaches are trained professionals who work with clients on performance, habits, transitions, and wellbeing. Book a free consultation to find out if coaching is the right fit for you.
