Most people train by feel. They push hard when they have energy, back off when they don't, and assume that effort equals progress. But there's a number hidden inside your physiology that tells a very different story โ€” and most people will never know it exists. That number is your lactate threshold. And in this episode of Transformational Conversations, Jordan Dunin sits down with Dylan Winters, director of corporate development for OVAL, to explain exactly what it is, why it matters, and what Jordan's own test results revealed.

The Test That Changed Everything

Jordan recently had a real lactate threshold test performed by OVAL โ€” a blood-based metabolic assessment that identifies the precise point at which his body stops burning fat and starts burning carbohydrates. "I did not know what to expect," Jordan said on the podcast. "And what came back genuinely surprised me."

The experience wasn't what Jordan expected. It was a real, in-person assessment โ€” with real blood lactate sampling at incremental exercise intensities โ€” that produced a precise, data-driven picture of his metabolic performance. It was the kind of test that elite athletes have had access to for years. OVAL is building the future where everyone can.

What Is Lactate Threshold?

Lactate threshold is the exercise intensity at which lactate begins to accumulate in the bloodstream faster than the body can clear it. Below that threshold, your body primarily burns fat for fuel โ€” efficient, sustainable, and metabolically flexible. Above it, you shift to carbohydrates โ€” a faster but far less sustainable energy system.

In plain English: your body has a switch. And most people don't know where it is.

"Your body has a switch โ€” and most people don't know where it is. Lactate testing tells you exactly where that switch is, so you can train on the right side of it." โ€” Dylan Winters, OVAL

Why Generic Heart Rate Zones Don't Work

Most fitness apps and wearables assign heart rate zones based on age-estimated formulas: 220 minus your age, multiplied by some percentage. These formulas have been shown in research to have margins of error as wide as 20โ€“30 beats per minute. For most people, they're essentially a guess.

OVAL's lactate testing replaces the guess with a measurement. Instead of training in a zone that might be Zone 2 for you, you train in a zone you know is Zone 2 โ€” because you've sampled the blood to prove it. The difference in training outcomes is significant.

Lactate Threshold, Stress & The Nervous System

One of the most compelling threads of the conversation is the connection Dylan draws between metabolic health and nervous system regulation โ€” which sits at the heart of HatchPath's philosophy.

Chronic stress elevates cortisol. Elevated cortisol impairs fat oxidation โ€” it pushes your metabolism toward carbohydrate burning even at low intensities. This means a stressed, under-recovered person may have a lower effective lactate threshold than their fitness level would otherwise suggest. The physiological cost of chronic stress shows up not just in your mood and sleep โ€” it shows up in your metabolism.

"Regulate first, perform better" isn't just a philosophy. In metabolic terms, it's what the data proves.

The 80/20 Rule โ€” Made Precise

Earlier in the HatchPath podcast season, Coach Alexandra Kozlowski laid out the 80/20 training principle: 80% of sessions should be low-intensity (Zone 1/2), with only 20% at high intensity. The science behind this is compelling โ€” it's the distribution used by elite endurance athletes across virtually every sport.

The problem with the 80/20 rule for most people: they don't actually know where Zone 2 ends and Zone 3 begins. So they guess โ€” and they usually guess too high, turning "easy" sessions into moderate-intensity workouts that add physiological stress without the aerobic base benefits they're supposed to build.

Lactate testing solves this. When you know your exact threshold, the 80/20 rule stops being a principle and becomes a precision protocol.

OVAL's Product Lineup

  • At-Home Self-Test: OVAL's entry-level test that gives you a meaningful picture of your metabolic fitness from home
  • SMART Concierge Test: A professional-grade assessment with real blood lactate sampling โ€” the test Jordan took โ€” that produces the most accurate threshold data available outside a sports science lab
  • Continuous Wearable (Coming Soon): A real-time lactate monitor โ€” think a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) for your metabolism. This changes everything: instead of a snapshot, you'll see your metabolic state in real time during every workout, every meeting, every night's sleep

"We're building the Oura Ring for your metabolism. Real-time lactate data that tells you not just how hard you're working โ€” but how your body is actually responding." โ€” Dylan Winters, OVAL

The MetFlex Index

One of the proprietary metrics OVAL has developed is the MetFlex Index โ€” a score that quantifies your metabolic flexibility: how efficiently your body can switch between fat and carbohydrate burning based on demand. A high MetFlex score means your metabolism is adaptable and efficient. A low score means your body is over-reliant on carbohydrates even at low intensities โ€” a pattern strongly associated with metabolic dysfunction, energy crashes, and poor recovery.

MetFlex is the kind of number that, once you have it, changes how you see every aspect of your health.

The HatchPath x OVAL Partnership

OVAL measures the metabolic side. HatchPath coaches the whole person. Together, they represent something Jordan has been building toward since founding HatchPath: the integration of objective physiological data with personalized human coaching.

"The data tells you where your body is," Jordan said in the close of the episode. "A coach helps you understand what to do about it โ€” and makes sure you actually do it."

For HatchPath members, the path forward is clear: know your threshold, train in alignment with it, and work with a coach who understands the full picture โ€” metabolic, nervous system, behavioral.
