Krystalore Crews has lived through more identity-shaking shifts than most people face in a lifetime: military service, a run in the NFL, an autoimmune disease diagnosis, cancer, and a personal betrayal that upended her life just as she thought she had it figured out. In this episode of Transformational Conversations, she sits down with Jordan Dunin to talk about what she's learned - namely, that resilience isn't something that happens to you. It's something you choose, over and over again.
The Power of Perspective
Krystalore's central thesis is a reframe most people never fully absorb: trauma is not the event itself - it's the body's response to it. She points to Marcus Aurelius: "If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your own estimate of it."
Her own experience with cancer and rheumatoid arthritis became the proving ground for this idea. "I had to decide that my illness didn't get to define who I was," she said. "The diagnosis was real. The identity I built around it was a choice." That distinction - between what happens and what it means - is the foundation of everything else she teaches.
"Resilience isn't about what happens to you. It's about the identity and meaning you choose in response. I didn't get to pick the diagnosis. I got to pick who I was going to be inside of it." — Krystalore Crews
Building Resilience: Intuition & Systems
One of the most striking parts of the conversation is Krystalore's relationship with intuition. She describes trusting intuitive nudges even when they seem illogical - like the time an inner pull led her to fly to Boston with two hours' notice for a therapy session that turned out to be a pivotal, co-creative breakthrough for both her and the therapist.
She calls this "building the system before you need it." Years before her own crisis - a betrayal that led to divorce - she wrote a bestselling book on resilience in just 30 days. She had no idea at the time that she'd soon be relying on its own principles to get herself through the hardest chapter of her life.
Accessing that kind of intuition requires quieting what Krystalore calls "the noisy head." Her entry point is deliberately small: start with short guided meditations - even two minutes on Spotify - and let the duration grow naturally. "You're not trying to become a monk overnight," she said. "You're building the muscle of stillness so the intuition has room to speak."
The Four Non-Negotiables Foundation
When life feels overwhelming, Krystalore's first move isn't a mindset shift - it's a physical audit. She calls it the Four Non-Negotiables: sleep, hydration, nutrition, and movement. The practice is simple: look honestly at the last 72 hours across all four areas.
"Your brain wants to catastrophize when you're overwhelmed," she explained. "But when you actually look at the data - have I slept, have I eaten, have I moved, have I had water - you often find the real problem isn't the crisis itself. It's that your nervous system has nothing to work with." Assessing the Four Non-Negotiables calms the nervous system first, and gives you real data to counter the spiral before you try to solve anything else.
- Sleep — quality and consistency over the last 72 hours
- Hydration — are you actually drinking enough water
- Nutrition — mindful, adequate eating, not skipped meals
- Movement — any physical activity, even brief
Coaching for Self-Leadership
Krystalore's coaching practice is built around a specific client persona: perfectionists and people-pleasers. "The root cause is almost always the same," she said. "A deep desire to serve others - often at the expense of their own well-being."
Her process starts with a free life alignment assessment that identifies where a client needs to delegate and where they need firmer boundaries. From there, she builds self-awareness through personality profiling and emotional intelligence work - helping clients reclaim their identity by understanding their own strengths and confidently asking for help with their weaknesses.
She also works with high-performing men who need what she calls a "secret weapon": a confidential strategist for the challenges they can't bring to HR, their board, or even their own families.
"Perfectionists and people-pleasers burn out because they've never been taught that delegating and setting boundaries isn't a failure of care - it's what makes the care sustainable." — Krystalore Crews
