The Science of Stillness: How Meditation Rewires Your Brain for Stress and Performance
A Transformational Conversation with Coach Jewelia Orlick
Our 60,000 to 80,000 daily thoughts - many of them worry about the future or rumination on the past - create a real, physical state of inflammation in the body. In this conversation, Coach Jewelia Orlick sits down with Jordan Dunin to unpack the science and practice of meditation: how it physically rewires the brain, why chronic stress is the root of so much disease, and how to build a meditation practice that actually sticks.
The Problem: Chronic Stress & Inflammation
Chronic stress is the root of inflammation, and inflammation is the root cause of nearly every chronic disease. Stress also has an immediate physical impact - Jordan shared that his own blood pressure spiked during a recent medical exam purely from anxiety, despite no underlying health issue.
"Our 60,000 to 80,000 daily thoughts - especially worry about the future or rumination on the past - create a physical state of inflammation. Meditation is one of the few tools that directly interrupts that cycle." — Jewelia Orlick
The Solution: Meditation's Neuroplastic Impact
Meditation physically rewires the brain through neuroplasticity, with measurable results in as little as 12 minutes of practice per day. In the amygdala - the brain's fear center - gray matter shrinks, reducing fear, anxiety, and worry. In the hippocampus - the brain's learning center - gray matter grows, improving learning, memory, and offering protection against Alzheimer's.
- Mantra: repeating a word or phrase mentally to anchor attention
- Breathwork: focusing on the inhale and exhale to regulate the nervous system
- Visualization: mentally rehearsing desired outcomes to prepare the mind for action
Practical Application: Consistency & Phased Practice
Jewelia's core advice for anyone starting out: start small. Begin with just 5 minutes a day and build from there. This creates a sustainable habit and avoids the high-resistance hurdle of longer sessions that causes most people to quit before the benefits ever arrive.
She also encourages tailoring the practice to whatever phase of life you're in - use visualization for goal-setting, or breathwork while lying down to downregulate the nervous system during burnout. And when life gets demanding, prioritize consistent, short practices over trying to maintain a full wellness routine. "Balance" isn't always realistic - but "consistency" is.
"Start with 5 minutes. That's it. Consistency beats intensity every time - a sustainable 5-minute habit will change your brain more than a 45-minute session you only do once." — Jewelia Orlick
What to Do Next
- Commit to 5 minutes of daily meditation or stillness
- Tailor your practice to your current phase - visualization for goal-setting, breathwork for burnout
- Start small and build consistency before chasing longer sessions
