Most of us have a pattern we can't seem to break. A restlessness that won't settle. An urgency that drives us past our own limits. A confidence that collapses at exactly the wrong moment. We try to manage these patterns with discipline, mindset shifts, or willpower, and they keep coming back. In this episode of Transformational Conversations, Keith Hodge sits down with Jordan Dunin to introduce a method he calls Root Healing: a way of tracing recurring patterns not to their triggers, but to the single emotional root where they began.

The Problem: Recurring Patterns & Pre-Existing States

Keith's central insight is that recurring patterns in our lives, in relationships, confidence, decision-making, aren't caused by what's happening now. They're caused by what he calls "pre-existing states": unresolved emotional imprints from the past that we carry forward and that quietly limit the actions available to us in the present.

The method didn't come from theory. It came from Keith's own breakdown. A personal health crisis, chronic fatigue syndrome, forced him to confront the patterns that were running his life and drove him to develop a way to resolve them at their source, not just manage their symptoms.

"Recurring patterns don't come from your current situation. They come from a pre-existing state, an emotional imprint from the past that's still running the show. You can't out-think it. You have to go back to where it began." Keith Hodge

True North: The State Root Healing Reaches For

On the other side of a pre-existing state is what Keith calls True North: a state of flow, calm, and clarity where decisions feel intuitive rather than forced. In True North, your choices are sustainable. You're not pushing against a current; you're moving with one. The contrast is sharp: a pre-existing state is driven by the past, while True North is driven by presence.

Protection vs. Root Emotion

One of the most clarifying ideas in the conversation is the distinction between a protection and a root emotion. The surface behaviors we struggle with, like restlessness, urgency, avoidance, people-pleasing, are protections. They're strategies the system developed to avoid feeling something it couldn't handle at the time.

Beneath every protection sits a root emotion that hasn't been faced. Keith's argument is direct: you can't dissolve the protective pattern by fighting it. You dissolve it by finally facing the emotion underneath it. The moment the root is genuinely felt, the protection loses its reason to exist, and it falls away on its own.

"Surface behaviors are protections. You don't fix them by attacking them. You face the root emotion they were built to protect, and the protection dissolves on its own." Keith Hodge

The Root Healing Process, in 5 Steps

  • Identify the Pattern: Name the recurring challenge you keep running into (restlessness, self-doubt, urgency, avoidance).
  • Locate It in the Body: Feel where the pattern physically lives. The body holds what the mind avoids.
  • Uncover the Root Emotion: Ask the heart, not the head, what is the underlying feeling driving this pattern?
  • Trace It to Origin: Find the first childhood memory where you felt that same emotion. That's where the imprint formed.
  • Face the Emotion: Allow yourself to fully experience the root emotion, without the old protection. Facing it is what dissolves the pattern.

Live Demo: Tracing Carys's Restlessness

The conversation moves from explanation to demonstration when a volunteer, Carys, steps in to trace her own "restlessness" pattern, the constant pull toward the next thing, never settling where she is.

Following Keith's process, she locates the felt sense of the pattern in her torso and stomach, then asks her heart for the underlying emotion. What surfaces is a fear of making the wrong choice, wrapped in uncertainty. The root is traced back to a childhood memory where that same fear was first felt and imprinted.

The exchange reveals something the method is designed to catch: the moment Carys names the fear, she immediately asks, "Is that okay?", a single line that exposes how the pattern protects itself by seeking permission for its own feelings. It's a small moment with a large teaching. The pattern doesn't just generate the restlessness; it generates the impulse to check, to confirm, to stay safe. Facing the root emotion meant sitting with the fear instead of managing the room around it.

What This Means for High Performers

High performers are especially prone to recurring patterns because the same protective behaviors that once helped them survive and succeed, like urgency, hypervigilance, perfectionism, are the ones that later drive burnout, strained relationships, and a sense of never quite arriving. Root Healing offers a precise alternative to simply managing those patterns harder: trace them to the single emotional root where they began, and meet that emotion directly.
