What Is the REGULATE Model? HatchPath's Framework for Sustainable Leadership

Most leadership frameworks focus on skills, strategies, and behaviors - the cognitive and tactical dimensions of performance. The REGULATE Model, developed by HatchPath founder Jordan Dunin and published in The Regulated Leader (2026), begins somewhere different: with the nervous system.

Why Regulation First?

"You cannot build a regulated culture on top of dysregulated leaders." This is the central insight behind the REGULATE Model. A leader whose nervous system is chronically activated makes narrower decisions, tolerates less ambiguity, defaults to control over collaboration, and models the very patterns of stress and reactivity that burn teams out.

The Eight Principles

  • R - Reset the Body Before You Lead: 60 seconds of intentional breathwork before high-stakes interactions shifts the autonomic nervous system from fight-or-flight to recovery mode
  • E - Energy Is a Leadership Asset: Treat energy like financial capital. Sleep, metabolic stability, and recovery are performance infrastructure, not personal preferences
  • G - Ground Emotional Reactivity: The average emotion peaks within 90 seconds if not reinforced by thought. Ground reactivity by intercepting the narrative before it amplifies
  • U - Upgrade Boundaries: Boundaries are biological protection mechanisms. Leaders without them absorb organizational stress - which surfaces as burnout, volatility, or withdrawal
  • L - Lead With Identity: When a leader's worth is fused with outcomes, every setback is an identity threat. Identity-stable leaders receive feedback without defensiveness
  • A - Align With Purpose: Purpose expands the nervous system's tolerance for pressure. Organizations led from purpose are more resilient, less volatile, and better able to sustain growth
  • T - Train Regulation Into Teams: Personal regulation is powerful; culture sustains it. Train teams through regulated behavioral norms, not wellness retreats
  • E - Engineer a Regulated Culture: Culture is the sum of daily behavioral norms. A regulated culture retains high performers and improves decision quality at every level

The regulated workforce performs better. The regulated leader decides better. The regulated organization wins.

HatchPath coaches are trained in the REGULATE Model and work with leaders and organizations to build the regulatory infrastructure that sustains performance.
