When Jordan Dunin sat down to write The Regulated Leader, he was not interested in writing another leadership book about communication frameworks or strategic thinking models. He had lived through something that gave him a different starting point: the understanding that before any leadership skill can function effectively, a leader's nervous system has to be in a state that makes those skills available.

The Central Insight

Every leadership behavior that matters — clear decision-making, emotional regulation, strategic thinking, empathetic listening, the ability to give honest feedback without triggering defensiveness — requires access to the prefrontal cortex. The prefrontal cortex is the brain's most sophisticated region, responsible for executive function, nuanced judgment, and the integration of emotion with reason.

When a leader's nervous system is in chronic sympathetic activation — when the brain is operating as if under threat — prefrontal access is reduced. The leader becomes reactive. Tunnel vision narrows their perspective. Emotional volatility increases. Long-range thinking diminishes. They can still perform — but they perform from a compromised position, making decisions and leading people from a depleted state.

"You cannot build a regulated culture on top of a dysregulated leader. The nervous system state of leadership is contagious — and its downstream effects show up in team performance, retention, and organizational health every day." — The Regulated Leader

Why This Matters for Organizations

The Regulated Leader makes the case — backed by neuroscience, organizational research, and clinical behavioral data — that leadership development programs which don't address the nervous system are building on an unstable foundation. You can teach a dysregulated leader every communication framework available. Without the physiological regulation to access prefrontal function under pressure, those frameworks become inaccessible at exactly the moments they're most needed.

HatchPath's coaching model was built around this insight. The company's coaches are trained not just in behavioral coaching, but in nervous system regulation — understanding how stress physiology affects behavior, and how to help clients build the regulatory practices that make behavioral change sustainable rather than effortful.

The Book as the Company's Intellectual Foundation

The Regulated Leader is available on Amazon and has been covered by Gulfshore Business, Medical Daily, and the Palm Beach Post, among others. It was written by Jordan as both a distillation of his own recovery experience and a framework for organizational leaders who recognize that something in the traditional model of high performance isn't working.

The book is organized around the REGULATE Model — eight principles for building regulatory capacity into leadership behavior, team culture, and organizational design. It is not abstract. It is designed to be used — by coaches, by HR leaders, by executives who feel the tension between the performance expectations they're subject to and the human beings they actually are.

The Personal Foundation

None of this came from a research lab. It came from Jordan's years of navigating chronic Lyme disease, a traumatic brain injury, and the discovery that regulation — not willpower, not information, not more effort — was the missing ingredient in his own healing. The regulated leader he writes about is, in part, the person he had to become in order to survive. And build two companies. And raise two sons. And finish a half Ironman.

"I wrote the book I needed when I was sick," he said. "And it turned out it was also the book that a lot of leaders needed — because even without chronic illness, the modern workplace creates conditions of chronic stress that produce the same regulatory failure. The solution is the same."
