What to Expect From Your First Coaching Session: A First-Timer's Guide

Most people arrive at their first coaching session not quite knowing what it will feel like. Will it be like therapy? Like a job interview? Like a pep talk? The answer is: it's its own thing - and most people find it surprisingly refreshing.
Before the Session: How to Prepare
- Spend 10–15 minutes thinking about what you most want to work on. It doesn't need to be a fully formed goal - even a sense of dissatisfaction or a vague desire for something different is a valid starting point
- Notice what's been bothering you most - at work, at home, internally. These threads often point toward the real work
- Come with genuine curiosity rather than a need to perform. You don't need to have the right answers. Your coach will help you find them
During the Session: What Will Happen
Your coach will likely begin by asking you questions - about your goals, your current reality, what's working, and what isn't. Good coaching questions feel different from other questions. They're not looking for information. They're designed to help you think more deeply and see things you haven't noticed.
You may feel moments of real clarity - insights that arrive during a coaching conversation and wouldn't have surfaced otherwise. You may also feel challenged, gently confronted with patterns or assumptions you've been operating from unconsciously.
After the Session: What to Do
- Capture your insights while they're fresh - write them down within an hour of the session
- Take one concrete action from the session before your next meeting, no matter how small
- Notice what the session stirred up - resistance, excitement, discomfort - all of it is information
Your first session with a HatchPath coach starts with a free concierge consultation - no pressure, just a conversation about what you need and who might be the right fit.
